About BUHOMA GORILLA GROUP
Mubare:
The family is comprised of 9 members among which one silverback. This is the oldest family of habituated gorillas in Uganda. The group derives its name from Mubare hills deep within Bwindi Impenetrable forest where the group was found. The family initially had 12 members with silverback Ruhondeza as the head then grew to 18. Due to infighting the group split and five members remained. Later in 2013, four members joined making them a total of 9. Its proximity to Buhoma makes it more competitive among tourists because it’s nearer than the rest.
Habinyanja:
The family has 18 members with two silverbacks. Deriving its name from a swamp Nyanja within Bwindi, the family is characterized by drama caused by power struggles and sometimes fights between the two silverbacks over family leadership. Visitors to this group could require approximately 3 – 8 hours of tracking.
Rushegura:
Unlike Habinyanja, this is a 19 member family with one silverback. It derives its name from ebishengura – a tree species that is dominant in the area where the family lives. The family is fond of crossing over and over to neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo. Besides, it is a very calm & peaceful family that often visits community gardens around Buhoma.
